i have a meeting with my advisor today to find out where i stand in terms of graduation next may. NEXT MAY!! it still seems so far away, but still so soon too--especially since the majority of my friends are graduating this may. :(
i'm pretty sure i'm on the right track to graduation, but i don't like to assume these sorts of plans so i'll keep my mouth shut.
in other thoughts, in my asian american studies course we were discussing the idea of the model minority and with it that of racial triangulation.
racial triangulation is the relationship of asian americans when juxtaposed to whites, african americans, and latinos. white is dominant, while asians are in the middle placing african american and latinos at the bottom. there is a reflection of this in dominant media. shows like er and grey's anatomy allow for interracial relationships between black men and asian women, but they are ultimately the exact same sort of relationship and they never end "happily ever after" as do white couples. within these shows, there are two sorts of relationships: sex without marriage and marriage without sex. the examples given in class focused on the relationships of chen and pratt (er) and rosgotra and gallant (also er). the former being the sex without marriage. additionally, grey's anatomy follows this sort of concept as well, yang's relationship with burke.
the plotline in grey's anatomy almost allowed a "happily ever after," however, burke ended up leaving yang at the altar. by doing so, they are juxtaposed with the white, superior couple. the interracial couple gets no happy ending and this keeps the racial "other" from overstepping or exceeding the dominance/superiority of the white couple.
it is an extremely interesting concept, especially because i used to watch er and my 8th grade self definitely could never have picked up on that. i think i might begin watching the seasons i missed and analyze them from a critical thinking standpoint. seems like fun!
also, asian american studies and new media technologies have become my favored classes. the others are real downers...
spring break 09 begins friday at 10PM for me!! 5 days!
