i wrote a letter to senator dick durbin regarding the implementation of mandatory community service for high school students, as well as for university students. i think by doing this, young adults will gain a better understanding of the homeless population. they will begin to understand that the homeless are not any different from any of us. they are real people too: they are somebody's mother, brother, cousin, teacher, friend. i think it's necessary to understand this and will teach empathy and compassion at an earlier age. my hope is that these young people will grow to be more humane and caring adults by the work they do within their community.
i doubt i'll receieve a letter in return, but i felt i needed to to do something.
in addition, i am going to volunteer at the st. patrick's church soup kitchen this summer because i'll have my car down here at school. i think i need to give more back to my community instead of simply taking, taking, taking.
